I have dedicated myself to creative paths on a cyclical basis and then tended to abandon them at the point where I was really starting to get good. If I didn't do it, life intervened. Yes writing a novel is hard for just the reasons you said. You never reach the end of it and publishing standards are so high as to seem unattainable. There is nothing like awareness of mortality to make you buckle down and focus. This is a nice blog. I have a meeting with my boss and my boss's boss to see if there is any way to save my job, where exactly the issues you mention are in play. Wish me luck.
